Google Business Profile
Definition
Google Business Profile (GBP) is Google's free business registration and management platform. The previous name was Google My Business (GMB); it was rebranded to Google Business Profile in 2021.
Businesses registered on GBP appear in local pack results (top 3 map results) in Google Search, Google Maps, Knowledge Panel, and Google AI Overviews. As of 2024, about 84% of local searches lead to offline visits or contact after being discovered online—making GBP essential infrastructure for offline and local businesses.
Summary
GBP registration and optimization essentials: ①Accurate business name (exact brand name) + careful primary category selection → ②NAP (name, address, phone) consistent across site, GBP, and other directories → ③Minimum 10 photos (exterior, interior, staff, products) → ④Upload Posts weekly → ⑤Reply to all reviews. In Korea, register both Naver Place and GBP.
Why You Need GBP
Visibility in local search
For location + category queries like "Gangnam SEO consulting" or "Seongdong-gu cafe," GBP-registered businesses appear in the top 3 Local Pack on the map—a more prominent position than organic result #1.
Securing a Knowledge Panel
When users search your brand name, the Knowledge Panel on the right (desktop) or top (mobile) delivers authoritative business information instantly. See Google Knowledge Graph for details.
Business information cited in AI answers
Google AI Overviews and other AI search systems cite accurate GBP information (address, hours, services). Missing or inaccurate GBP can lead to wrong information in AI answers. See Entity SEO for details.
Five Steps to Register GBP
Step 1: Sign up
Log in with a Google account at business.google.com and click "Start managing your business." If Google auto-created a listing, you may see "Do you own this business?"
Step 2: Enter business information
- Business name: Enter the exact legal/trade name. Adding SEO keywords violates GBP policy and can lead to suspension.
- Category: Primary category is the most important local ranking factor. Choose the most specific accurate category and expand with up to 9 additional categories.
- Location: Physical address customers visit, or service area (for delivery/on-site services).
- Contact: Phone number and website URL.
Step 3: Verification
Google verifies that the business exists. Verification methods:
- Postcard: Most common. Google mails a PIN to the business address (typically 2–4 weeks in Korea).
- Phone verification: Available immediately for some business types.
- Email verification: Available under some conditions.
- Video verification: Introduced in 2024. Submit video of business exterior and interior.
Step 4: Complete profile
After verification, add information to complete the profile:
- Business hours: Regular, temporary hours, holiday hours
- Website URL: Link to your site
- Services/products list: Register services or products in detail
- Photos: Minimum 10 recommended. Include exterior, interior, staff, products/services
- Description: Up to 750 characters. Natural introduction to your services
Step 5: Verify and monitor
After verification, search your brand on Google and confirm the Knowledge Panel displays correctly. Monitor performance in the Insights tab of the GBP dashboard: search impressions, clicks, direction requests, etc.
Seven Core GBP Optimization Practices
1. NAP (name, address, phone) consistency
Business name, address, and phone must match across GBP, your website (especially footer), Naver Place, and other directories. Inconsistency lowers Google's trust signals. See Entity SEO for details.
2. Accurate primary category
Primary category is the single most important factor for which local searches you appear in. Choose a specific category ("SEO consulting") over a generic one ("Business services").
3. Rich, high-quality photos
GBPs with many quality photos get higher click-through and visit intent. Regularly adding new photos signals an active profile. Minimum recommendation: 3 exterior, 3 interior, 3 team photos.
4. Regular Posts uploads
Use GBP Posts for events, new products, promotions, and news. Post at least weekly. Standard posts expire after 7 days; event posts display until the event ends.
5. Active review management
Reviews are a core local SEO ranking signal.
- Reply to all reviews (positive and negative) as the business owner
- Directly ask satisfied customers for reviews
- Report fake reviews immediately (use GBP "Report" feature)
- For negative reviews, write professional replies showing improvement intent, not defensive ones
6. Use Q&A
Answer customer questions in GBP Q&A. Business owners can pre-register frequently asked questions and prepare answers. This synergizes with FAQ schema. See FAQPage Schema for details.
7. Analyze Insights data
In GBP Insights, review search queries, map impressions, and click types (website, phone, directions). Use this data to see which services and location keywords perform.
GBP and AEO
Business as an entity
GBP is a key way to register a business as an entity in Google's Knowledge Graph. Accurate GBP information is a trusted data source when LLMs learn about that business. See Google Knowledge Graph for details.
Local information cited in AI answers
For local AI queries like "Recommend a trustworthy SEO consulting company in Gangnam, Seoul," GBP information is cited. Complete, accurate GBP profiles tend to be cited preferentially in AI answers.
Application in the Korean Market
Importance of GBP in Korea
Naver holds over half the search market in Korea, but Google's share reached roughly 30–35% in 2024 and continues to grow. GBP is essential for businesses targeting foreign tourists, global business development, and B2B prospects who primarily use Google.
Relationship with Naver Place
For domestic Korean customers, separate registration on Naver Place (Naver My Business) is also required. GBP and Naver Place are managed independently; keep NAP consistent across both. See Naver SEO for details.
Korean address format
Use road-name addresses (nationwide since 2014). Use road-name address on GBP and keep it identical across all channels to avoid mismatch with lot-number addresses.
Verification time in Korea
Postcard verification in Korea typically takes 2–4 weeks after mailing. Until verified, the profile may show as "unverified" with limited search visibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Should B2B companies register GBP too?
A. Yes. B2B companies with a physical office should register GBP. When potential partners or clients search the company, a Knowledge Panel increases trust and credibility. Service area business option hides the physical address and shows only service areas.
Q. How long until GBP appears in search after registration?
A. Usually within days to two weeks after verification. Reaching top Local Pack in competitive categories can take months of review accumulation and NAP consistency.
Q. Do GBP edits affect rankings?
A. Important changes (category, address, service description) may trigger Google re-review. Category changes especially affect rankings—decide carefully. Hours, photos, and posts can be updated without ranking risk.
Q. Can I leave GBP unmanaged?
A. Neglect allows users to suggest incorrect edits. Anyone can suggest changes via "Suggest an edit," and Google sometimes applies them without review. Check GBP at least monthly to keep information accurate.
Q. Can one business have multiple GBP profiles?
A. Yes, if you have physically separate locations—one profile per location. Multiple profiles at the same address violate GBP policy. Single-location businesses should maintain one profile.
