Link Profile

최종 업데이트:

Definition

Link Profile is the comprehensive set of characteristics of all backlinks a website receives from external sources. Rather than simple backlink count, it comprehensively analyzes link sources, quality, diversity, anchor text, and temporal distribution to evaluate the health of the site's link-based authority.

Google treats links as "votes of trust" but increasingly distinguishes manipulated link patterns from naturally occurring ones. A healthy link profile is the foundation of SEO authority; an unhealthy link profile causes SpamBrain penalties.

Summary

Link profile essentials: ① Referring Domains count matters more than total backlinks → ② Anchor text: brand 30–40%, exact match under 5–10% → ③ Natural growth from relevant industry domains → ④ Monthly audit with Ahrefs → ⑤ SpamBrain handles spam automatically; use Disavow if abnormal patterns persist → ⑥ Authoritative sites are also prioritized in LLM citations.

6 Dimensions of Link Profile

1. Volume (Total Backlinks)

Total backlink count. Alone, it means little. One backlink each from 100 different domains is far more valuable than 100 backlinks from the same domain. See What Are Backlinks? for details.

2. Domain Diversity (Referring Domains)

How many different domains link to you. Ahrefs Referring Domains metric has more direct SEO authority impact than total backlink count. Large link volume from a single domain can be recognized as unnatural. See Domain Authority for details.

3. Authority Distribution

Authority (DR/DA) distribution of linking domains. Pyramid distribution (few high-authority + many mid-low authority) is natural. Only very low DR or all DR 90+ suspicious sites is abnormal.

4. Anchor Text Distribution

See Anchor Text for details. Normal distribution targets:

  • Brand name anchor: 30–40%
  • Naked URL: 20–25%
  • Partial keyword match: 15–20%
  • Generic anchor (click here, here, etc.): 10–15%
  • Exact keyword match: 5–10%

Exact keyword match anchor over 50% risks recognition as manipulated link pattern. This was a major Google Penguin detection target.

5. Topical Relevance

Whether linking domain topics relate to your site. B2B SaaS getting links from casino sites has low relevance and low link value. Links from authoritative sites in the same industry are most valuable.

6. Temporal Distribution

How backlinks grew over time. Natural growth is gradual. Thousands appearing suddenly in one month signals link buying/manipulation.

Healthy vs Unhealthy Link Profile

[COMPARISON_TABLE: Healthy vs unhealthy link profile — 6 dimension comparison]

Healthy profile

  • Domain diversity: High (varied independent domains)
  • Authority distribution: Natural pyramid
  • Anchor text: Brand-centered, varied forms
  • Topical relevance: High
  • Growth pattern: Gradual, natural

Unhealthy profile

  • Domain diversity: Low (concentrated on few domains)
  • Authority distribution: Concentrated very low quality
  • Anchor text: Excessive exact keyword match
  • Topical relevance: Low (many unrelated domains)
  • Growth pattern: Sharp spikes

5-Step Link Profile Analysis

Step 1: Collect backlink data

  • Ahrefs Site Explorer: Most comprehensive backlink database. Check Referring Domains, Anchor Text, New Backlinks. See Ahrefs for details.
  • Google Search Console: Free. Can check top backlinks Google recognizes.
  • Semrush Backlink Analytics: Major paid tool alongside Ahrefs.

Step 2: Evaluate Referring Domains count

Check ratio of total backlinks to Referring Domains. If Referring Domains is much lower than total backlinks (e.g., 100 vs 10,000), links may be concentrated on few domains — unnatural pattern.

Step 3: Analyze authority distribution

Use Ahrefs DR (Domain Rating) distribution chart to see which authority levels primarily link to you. If very low quality DR 1–10 backlinks dominate, cleanup may be needed.

Step 4: Analyze anchor text distribution

In Ahrefs Anchors report, check exact keyword match anchor ratio. Exceeding 5–10% warrants investigating manipulation.

Step 5: Sample topical relevance

Visit top 50–100 backlinks directly and evaluate topical relevance. If links concentrate from unrelated niche spam sites, consider Disavow.

5 Strategies to Strengthen Link Profile

1. Guest posting

Contribute to authoritative sites in the same industry for brand anchor links. High-quality guest posts in relevant niches greatly improve link profile. See How to Get Backlinks Through Guest Posting for details.

2. HARO and expert citations

Respond to journalist and blogger expert citation requests for media backlinks. Links from authoritative news domains benefit both DR and brand signals. See How to Get Backlinks Through HARO and Expert Citations for details.

3. Natural backlinks through high-quality content

Data reports, original research, and industry statistics naturally get cited by other sites. Such organic backlinks raise both anchor text diversity and domain diversity.

4. Digital PR

Digital PR activities driving brand mentions and links in online media create high-quality news domain backlinks.

5. Wikipedia and entity signals

Citing your company as source in Wikipedia-related entries or registering as entity in Google Knowledge Graph strengthens trust signals. See Wikipedia Entity Registration Guide for details.

Handling Negative Links (Toxic Backlinks)

Finding toxic backlinks

Identify spam backlinks with Ahrefs "Toxic Score" or Semrush "Toxic Backlinks" filter. Negative SEO where competitors intentionally plant spam links also occurs.

SpamBrain automatic handling

Most spam backlinks are automatically neutralized by Google's SpamBrain. Google states "most spam links are handled algorithmically, so Disavow is rarely needed." See SpamBrain for details.

Using Disavow Tool

Use GSC Disavow Tool when abnormal spam backlink patterns persist or manual action (link spam) is received. Submit URLs and domains to reject in text file format.

# disavow.txt example
domain:spamsite1.com
domain:spamsite2.net
https://badsite.com/specific-spam-page

See Google Manual Actions for details.

Link Profile Monitoring Frequency

  • New site: Weekly (fast growth period, early abnormal pattern detection)
  • Stable site: Monthly (Referring Domains changes, new spam link detection)
  • High negative SEO risk site: Daily or Ahrefs alert setup (automatic alerts)

alleo.wiki Link Profile Strategy

alleo.wiki (SEO/AEO wiki) and alleo.pro (service) can form complementary link structure. When alleo.wiki naturally attracts external backlinks through high-quality SEO content, that authority passes to alleo.pro through internal links. This is normal owned backlink strategy.

Normal owned backlinks vs PBN distinction

  • Valuable content wiki → service link: Normal
  • Fake content site network → service link: PBN (Private Blog Network), spam policy violation

See Google Spam Policies for details.

Link Profile and AEO

Authority signals in LLM training data

Sites with healthy link profiles are generally cited more by external sites. When LLMs process training data, content from frequently cited domains tends to receive weight, indirectly increasing AI answer citation potential.

Connection with entity authority

Backlinks are also trust signals for specific entities (brand, person, organization). Links with brand name anchors from diverse authoritative domains strengthen that brand's entity authority. See AI Share of Voice for details.

Korean Market Application

Specifics of Korean backlink ecosystem

The Korean content ecosystem is smaller than English. The pool of Korean authoritative domain backlinks Korean sites can acquire is narrow. Supplement with English content and English backlinks for global SEO effect and domain authority improvement in Korean search.

Naver backlink weight

Backlinks from Naver blog and cafe are processed differently from Google. Google mainly aggregates external domain links; links from Naver's own domain (blog.naver.com) may have different weight than independent domains. See Naver SEO for details.

Korean tool limitations

Ahrefs and Semrush Korean backlink data has lower coverage than English data. Korean-specific backlink analysis is recommended alongside Naver Search Advisor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I rank higher with fewer backlinks than competitors?
A. Yes. Quality and relevance matter more than total backlink count. 10 relevant high-authority domain backlinks are far stronger SEO signals than 1,000 irrelevant low-quality backlinks. Comparing Referring Domains and domain authority distribution with competitors is more meaningful.

Q. Can I fully control anchor text?
A. Backlinks you create (guest posts, directory listings) can be partially controlled. However, anchor text of natural backlinks is decided by linking sites. Naturally occurring diverse anchor text patterns create the healthiest profile.

Q. Competitors are sending spam links via negative SEO. What should I do?
A. First remember SpamBrain handles most automatically. Set Ahrefs alerts to monitor sudden abnormal backlink spikes; if suspicious domain patterns repeat, add to Disavow file. No need to overreact unless manual action occurs.

Q. Are nofollow backlinks included in link profile?
A. Yes. nofollow links do not directly pass PageRank but Google uses them as reference data in link profile analysis. nofollow links also contribute to traffic, brand awareness, and referring domain diversity. Excessively high or low dofollow ratios can appear unnatural.

Q. How quickly can link profile improve?
A. Link profile improvement is long-term strategy. Even with steady guest posting and digital PR, meaningful Referring Domains growth takes months. Sharp short-term backlink spikes become SpamBrain watch targets — maintain natural growth pace.
