Doorway Pages

최종 업데이트:

Definition

Doorway pages are sets of low-quality pages mass-produced to rank for specific keyword combinations, designed to funnel users to a real destination (conversion page, ads, or another site). They are explicitly prohibited in Google's Spam Policy.

The core characteristic of doorways is that pages are built for search algorithms, not users.

Summary

Key question when auditing doorways: "Do these pages differ only by location/category name with everything else the same?" If yes, they are doorways. The fix is one—consolidate all doorways into a single comprehensive page and set 301 redirects.

Google's Definition of Doorway Pages

Google's Spam Policy describes doorway pages as having these traits:

  • Many similar pages for specific cities, regions, or countries
  • Content identical except for location or category variables
  • Visitors sent to low-relevance pages
  • Not naturally integrated into site navigation
  • Search engine traffic prioritized over actual site visitors

4 Doorway Page Patterns

Pattern 1: Location Variant Pages

The most common form. The same service or product page is duplicated dozens or hundreds of times with only the location name changed.

example.com/seo-manhattan
example.com/seo-brooklyn
example.com/seo-queens
example.com/seo-bronx
... (all boroughs)

If 90%+ of each page's content is identical and lacks real local information (actual address, local case studies, local reviews), it is a doorway.

Pattern 2: Keyword Variant Pages

Separate pages are mass-generated by varying keywords with the same intent.

example.com/best-seo-service
example.com/top-seo-service
example.com/recommended-seo-service
example.com/trusted-seo-service

Pattern 3: Auto-Generated Category Pages

Empty pages auto-generated from database category/tag combinations. No content or only minimal auto-filled text.

Pattern 4: Affiliate Doorways

Affiliate pages mass-produced with only product or model names changed and identical structure. Each page only links to affiliate URLs with no standalone value.

Doorway vs. Legitimate Local SEO Pages

[COMPARISON_TABLE: Doorway Pages vs. Legitimate Local SEO Pages]

Doorway (Spam, Penalty Target)

  • Auto-generated, template-based
  • Only location name differs; content identical
  • No real local info (address, hours, local case studies)
  • No actual business in the location
  • SEO exposure only

Legitimate Local SEO Page (Allowed)

  • Real business operating in each location
  • Location-specific content (address, hours, local team)
  • Local customer reviews and case studies
  • Local partnerships and community involvement

Penalties for Doorway Pages

SpamBrain Auto-Detection

Google's AI spam detection system SpamBrain learns doorway patterns and identifies them automatically. Mass-generated similar pages are detected quickly. See SpamBrain for details.

Manual Action

Even if SpamBrain does not catch them, Google's spam team may issue manual actions after review. Check the "Security & Manual Actions" tab in GSC. See Google Manual Actions for details.

Thin Content Impact

Doorway pages are also thin content. When the Helpful Content system evaluates the whole site, doorways lower overall site quality scores. See Thin Content for details.

3 Ways to Fix Doorway Pages

Method 1: Consolidate (Recommended)

Merge multiple location/category doorway pages into one comprehensive page. Set 301 redirects from old doorway URLs to preserve link equity.

Example: 25 location-specific SEO service pages → one "Nationwide SEO Services" page

Method 2: Enrich Content

If you actually operate in each location, add genuine local information to convert each page into a legitimate local page.

  • Real address and hours
  • Local contact or team introduction
  • Local customer reviews and case studies
  • Location-specific service details

Method 3: Delete

Doorways with no business value and no backlinks should be fully removed with 410 responses. If backlinks exist, 301 redirect to the most relevant page.

Reconsideration After Manual Action

  1. Remove all doorways: deletion or consolidation complete
  2. Submit reconsideration request: GSC → Security & Manual Actions → Request Review
  3. Specific explanation: number of doorways found, how they were handled, prevention measures
  4. Minimum wait: reconsideration usually takes 2–4 weeks
  5. Re-review: if action was insufficient, a second review request is possible

See Google Manual Actions for details.

English-Language Market Considerations

Common Doorway Patterns

  • "Location + category" auto-generation: "Manhattan interior design", "Brooklyn interior design", "Queens interior design"... auto-generated for every area nationwide
  • CMS empty category auto-generation: auto-generated category pages with no products or services on Shopify, WooCommerce, etc.
  • Keyword variant pages: "best OOO", "top OOO", "OOO reviews"... same content with minor variations

Distinguishing from Local SEO

Legitimate local SEO pages integrated with Google Business Profile are not doorways. The standard is whether a real business operates locally and provides location-specific value.

FAQ

Q. Can I create location pages if I have real locations in each area?
A. Yes. If each location exists and each page includes address, contact, hours, and location-specific services, they are legitimate local SEO pages. Content must be unique and valuable per location.

Q. If I have auto-generated pages, are they all doorways?
A. Auto-generation alone is not a doorway. Ecommerce product pages generated from a database are fine if each page offers unique value (product info, reviews, pricing). Content similarity and user value are the criteria.

Q. How do I find doorway pages quickly?
A. In site:example.com search, many pages with similar titles are a doorway signal. Crawl with Screaming Frog and analyze title and content similarity for a systematic audit. See Google Search Operators for details.

Q. Won't deleting doorways reduce overall traffic?
A. Traffic may drop short term. However, doorway traffic usually has high bounce and low conversion. Consolidating authority into one page typically yields higher-quality traffic medium to long term.

Q. If I already received a manual action, can I recover?
A. Yes. Remove all doorways completely and submit a reconsideration request to lift the manual action. After removal, algorithmic ranking recovery may still take an additional 1–3 months.
