Topical Authority

최종 업데이트:

Definition

Topical authority is the comprehensive expertise and trustworthiness a site holds on a specific topic, and it is the criterion by which search engines and AI answer engines preferentially cite content on that topic.

TL;DR

Topical authority is the implicit trust granted to a site that covers a topic deeply and comprehensively. When you systematically cover an entire topic rather than a single keyword, the rankings of individual pages rise together. In the AI era, LLMs repeatedly cite the "trusted source" for a given topic, so topical authority is directly tied to how often AI cites you.

Components of Topical Authority

  1. Topic coverage: How comprehensively you cover the subtopics of a given topic
  2. Content depth: How deeply you cover each subtopic
  3. Internal link structure: Whether the pages within the topic are systematically connected via a Pillar-Cluster structure
  4. External citations: Whether other authoritative sites cite this site on the topic
  5. Consistency: Whether you steadily publish content focused on the topic

Strategy for Building Topical Authority

Step 1: Define the core topic and map its subtopics
Step 2: Write a Pillar page (an overview of the topic)
Step 3: Write Cluster pages (subtopics) one by one, linking each to the Pillar with internal links
Step 4: Update content regularly and add new subtopics

Topical Authority in AEO

AI answer engines tend to repeatedly cite sites that consistently provide accurate information on a specific topic. A site with high topical authority is more likely to be cited simultaneously across multiple questions on that topic.
