Keyword Gap Analysis

최종 업데이트:

Definition

Keyword gap analysis is the systematic process of finding keywords where competitors appear in search results or AI answers but your site does not. It is used to discover content opportunities you have not yet covered and to decide which topics to prioritize.

Traditionally, analysis was based on Google SERP visibility, but in the AEO era, gap analysis based on AI answer engine citations has emerged as a new core area.

Three Types of Keyword Gaps

1. Competitor vs Your Site Gap (Most Common)

Keywords where a specific competitor ranks but you do not. Ahrefs Content Gap and Semrush Keyword Gap can extract these automatically. Specify 2–5 direct competitors to get a list of keywords where competitors rank in the top 3 but you do not.

2. Category vs Your Site Gap

Major topic keywords commonly used in an industry that your site does not cover. Analyze beyond direct competitors to include industry media, vertical blogs, and review sites for broader coverage. Especially useful when exploring new categories or auditing overall topic coverage.

3. AI Citation Gap (Core Area in the AEO Era)

Topics where competitors are cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews but you are not. Traditional keyword gap tools struggle to identify these; use AI Visibility tools or direct prompt testing.

AI citation gaps deserve the most attention because of their directness. If AI cites a competitor for a question, it means you can earn AI citations by creating strong content for that question. This is an empirically validated opportunity, not speculation.

5-Step Gap Analysis

Step 1: Define Competitors

Competitors fall into three types.

  • Direct competitors: Companies selling the same product or service. Business rivals.
  • Indirect competitors: Companies solving the same customer problem differently. Substitutes.
  • Content competitors: Media, blogs, and comparison sites ranking for the same keywords. Content, not products, is the competition.

Avoid analyzing only direct competitors. Industry media and review sites often dominate major keywords.

Step 2: Extract Gaps with Tools

Ahrefs Content Gap:
Competitive Analysis → Content Gap. Enter your domain and competitor domains to extract keywords where competitors rank but you do not.

Semrush Keyword Gap:
Compare your site with competitors in Keyword Gap to see Missing (you don't have) and Weak (you have but rank lower) keywords.

Both tools are optimized for English data; Korean keyword accuracy is partial. Validate important results with actual SERP checks.

Step 3: Evaluate and Prioritize Gap Keywords

You cannot cover every extracted gap keyword, so prioritize using three criteria.

  • Search volume: Does monthly volume meet a minimum threshold?
  • Business fit: Does it connect to your product or service?
  • Competition (Keyword Difficulty): Is the difficulty achievable?

Summing scores across the three criteria efficiently produces a top priority list.

Step 4: Classify by Search Intent

Classify priority keywords as informational, commercial, or transactional (see search intent classification). Content format depends on intent: informational gaps → blog/guides; commercial gaps → comparison pages/reviews; transactional gaps → landing/pricing pages.

Step 5: AI Citation Gap Analysis

Steps 1–4 cover traditional SEO gaps. Analyze AI citation gaps separately.

Manual method:
Convert major gap keywords into natural-language questions (prompt keywords) and enter them directly into ChatGPT and Perplexity. List prompts where competitors are cited but you are not.

Tool-based:
AI Visibility tools such as ALLEO AI automatically track citation status across AI answer engines and visualize gaps.

4 Steps to Fill AI Citation Gaps

Once you discover an AI citation gap, create content in this order.

Step 1: Convert gap prompts into natural-language questions
Expand a gap keyword like "keyword clustering methods" into an AI question form such as "Tell me step by step how a startup marketer should start keyword clustering for the first time."

Step 2: Write answer blocks
Write a 50–150 character core answer first using BLUF structure (conclusion first), then add step-by-step explanation and evidence. AI prefers clearly structured content for citation.

Step 3: Apply structured markup
Use FAQ and HowTo schema so search engines and AI can understand content structure easily.

Step 4: Measure citation change after 30–90 days
At least 30 days after publishing, check AI answers again with the same prompt. If cited, success; if not, improve content directness, structure, and credibility.

Gap Analysis Cadence

Quarterly — comprehensive gap analysis:
Extract SEO gaps across competitor domains and update the content roadmap. Also identify new content areas competitors have started.

Monthly — AI citation gap check:
Monitor AI answer citation status against your main prompt keyword list. Check whether competitors have started being cited for new topics.

Pitfalls and Cautions

Pitfall 1: Chasing volume and ignoring fit
High-volume gap keywords with no connection to your product won't convert. Gap analysis must always pass through a business fit filter.

Pitfall 2: Trying to cover too many gaps at once
Gap tools can output hundreds of keywords. Trying to cover them all produces shallow content and backfires. Strictly select the top 20–30 and cover them in depth.

Pitfall 3: Filling gaps once and never updating
Filling a gap once is not the end. Competitors keep creating content and AI citation patterns change. Regular gap checks and content updates sustain visibility.

Application in the Korean Market

For Korean market gap analysis, Ahrefs and Semrush Korean data coverage focuses on Google search and may miss Naver search gaps. Analyze Naver gaps separately using Naver Search Ad Keyword Tool and Naver Search Advisor.

Competitor content mapping should also be split between Google and Naver. A competitor strong on Google with infographics and guides may rank on Naver with different content formats.

FAQ

Are Content Gap and Keyword Gap different?
They are tool naming differences. Ahrefs calls it Content Gap; Semrush calls it Keyword Gap, but functionality is similar: comparing competitor and your domains to find keywords you lack.

How often do AI citation gaps appear?
In fast cases, AI citations can occur within weeks after a competitor publishes content. Even after you create content, AI citation typically takes 30–90 days. Continuous monitoring is necessary.

Is gap analysis meaningful for small sites?
It is even more important. Smaller sites must decide where to spend limited resources. Gap analysis helps find niches with low competition and existing search demand for faster results.
