Click-Through Rate (CTR)

최종 업데이트:

Definition

CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the percentage of search result impressions that resulted in actual clicks.

CTR(%) = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100

If impressions are 1,000 and clicks are 30, CTR is 3%. High CTR means users find your link appealing in search results, measuring effectiveness of title, description, URL, and rich results in SERP presentation.

Summary

CTR diagnoses "high rank but low traffic." Improving title tags and meta descriptions can increase clicks without rank changes. In GSC performance reports, find pages with low CTR and high impressions first for the fastest traffic improvement.

Average CTR by rank: Backlinko research data

[INFOGRAPHIC: Average CTR bar chart for SERP positions 1-10]

Backlinko analyzed 4 million+ Google search results in 2023 and published average CTR by rank.

RankAverage CTR
1st27.6%
2nd15.8%
3rd11.0%
4th8.4%
5th6.3%
6th4.9%
7th3.9%
8th3.3%
9th2.7%
10th2.4%
11–20 (page 2)Under 1%

Key takeaways:

  • 1st position CTR is ~1.75x 2nd
  • Combined page 1 CTR is dozens of times page 2 combined
  • 10th position CTR (2.4%) is about 1/11 of 1st (27.6%)

These are averages; large variation exists by search intent, category, and rich result presence.

Seven factors affecting CTR

1. Average position

Most direct influence. CTR increases exponentially as rank rises. See Average Position for details.

2. Title tag

Single element with largest CTR impact. Google sometimes rewrites titles, so original titles must be clear and compelling.

Effective title patterns:

  • Include numbers: "7 methods," "2026 latest guide"
  • Place core keyword early
  • Place brand name at end (when recognized)

See Title Tag for details.

3. Meta description

Supports click decisions. Meta description does not directly affect rank but clear value propositions and CTAs can raise CTR. See Meta Description for details.

4. URL structure

Short, meaningful URLs build trust. example.com/aeo-guide is more click-worthy than example.com/blog/p=1234.

5. Rich results

[INFOGRAPHIC: SERP rich result type examples]

Pages with FAQPage, HowTo schema, ratings, etc. occupy more SERP space and have higher CTR. See FAQPage Schema for details.

6. Search intent match

Title and description must match query search intent (informational, commercial, transactional). See Four Types of Search Intent for details.

7. Brand awareness

Known brand names in SERP increase click probability. See Entity SEO for details.

CTR and ranking relationship

Google official position

Google's John Mueller has stated multiple times that CTR is not used directly as a ranking signal. However, 2024 Google court disclosures confirmed RankBrain uses user behavior signals (clicks, dwell, bounce).

Practical perspective

High CTR leads to:

  1. More traffic → more user behavior data
  2. If user satisfaction is high → advantage in core updates

Direct causation is uncertain, but CTR optimization has direct value through traffic growth and user experience improvement.

How to measure CTR

Google Search Console

Most accurate free CTR measurement tool.

[SCREENSHOT: GSC performance report — query-level CTR column]

  1. GSC → Performance → Search results
  2. Enable CTR checkbox
  3. Switch to Queries/Pages tabs
  4. Pages with 0% CTR = impressions but no clicks → immediate improvement needed

See Google Search Console for details.

Five CTR improvement strategies

Strategy 1: Title A/B testing

Change titles and measure CTR change in GSC after 2–4 weeks. Compare to previous period within same query group.

Strategy 2: Include CTA in meta description

Clear calls to action like "Learn more," "Get started today" can raise CTR.

Strategy 3: Secure rich results with FAQPage schema

FAQ rich results occupy more SERP space and let users confirm questions before clicking, driving relevant clicks.

Strategy 4: Optimize titles by search intent

Even for the same page, understand main incoming query intent (informational vs commercial) and adjust titles accordingly.

Strategy 5: Include year/numbers in titles

Phrases like "2026 latest," "3 steps to" tend to drive clicks. Content must match claims.

CTR changes in the AI Overviews era

Overall CTR decline

BrightEdge 2025 analysis reported CTR decline trends on some informational queries after Google AI Overviews. AI providing direct answers reduces click motivation — the "zero-click" phenomenon. See Zero-Click Search for details.

CTR for AI Overviews cited sites

Conversely, sites cited in AI Overviews may see CTR increases as trust signals. Securing AI citations through AEO optimization is important for this reason. See Google AI Overviews for details.

Local market application

Local CTR pattern specifics

  • Very high mobile share makes mobile SERP CTR distribution important
  • On mobile, ads above organic results may reduce actual 1st organic CTR vs desktop
  • On Naver, CTR distributes differently across integrated search areas (blog, knowledge, shopping, etc.)

Measuring Naver organic CTR

Naver lacks integrated measurement tools like GSC. Naver Search Advisor provides some data but not GSC-level detail.

Frequently asked questions

Q. Does low CTR cause rankings to drop?
A. Direct causation is unconfirmed. Low CTR means less traffic and less user behavior data, which may indirectly hurt rankings. More importantly, low CTR means less traffic even at high rank.

Q. Should I use average CTR as my site target?
A. Averages are reference only. Large variation by industry, keyword type, rich results, and brand awareness. Comparing to your site's historical data is more meaningful.

Q. Does omitting meta description lower CTR?
A. Google auto-extracts from body text when meta description is missing. Auto-extracts vary by query, lacking consistency. Written meta descriptions tend to convey click intent better.

Q. I'm 1st but CTR is only 5%. Why?
A. Ads, knowledge panels, AI Overviews, or shopping boxes at top of SERP for that query greatly reduce 1st organic CTR. Low brand awareness or titles mismatched to query are also causes.

Q. Fastest way to raise CTR?
A. Find pages with high impressions but low CTR in GSC and improve title tags. Improving existing page SERP presentation shows traffic change much faster than raising rank.
